In April 1972, Apollo 16 marked a significant milestone in the exploration of the Moon, as it became the fifth successful crewed mission to land on the lunar surface. The mission, launched on April 16, carried astronauts John W. Young and Charles M. Duke Jr. in the Lunar Module Orion, aiming to explore the rugged highlands of the Moon—a region that had remained largely uncharted.
On April 21, the lunar module made a successful landing in the Descartes Highlands, an area selected for its geological significance. Young and Duke spent over three days on the lunar surface, conducting extensive scientific investigations that included collecting rock samples and capturing high-resolution photographs of the terrain. Their work aimed to further understand the Moon's geological history and assess its potential resources.
Young, the commander of the mission, became the ninth person to walk on the Moon, followed by Duke, who was the tenth. The astronauts conducted three extravehicular activities (EVAs), totaling approximately 20 hours. They utilized a Lunar Roving Vehicle, which allowed them to cover greater distances than previous missions, venturing over 27 kilometers from their landing site.
Apollo 16 also bore witness to the successful deployment of scientific instruments designed to measure the Moon's electromagnetic and seismic activities, providing invaluable data for future lunar explorations. The mission concluded on April 27, when Young and Duke, along with command module pilot Ken Mattingly, returned safely to Earth.
